Hello divas! I hope that your week has started off well. It is super hot and humid here in Tennessee these past few weeks so I have been hanging out indoors a lot – including most of my workouts.
When I first started trying to get fit, I tried so many things. I joined gyms, contemplated hiring a trainer, attended group fitness classes, you name it. While I love group fitness classes (I am an instructor after all!), I just found I wasn’t getting all that I needed or wanted.
So I started working out from home. But I quickly realized I didn’t own a lot of the equipment I would need. Today I thought it would be fun to share some fitness tips for busy people and the fitness equipment items that will help you build your home gym.

I knew when I started using my at-home workouts that if I wanted to continue, I would have to invest in some basic fitness equipment to use at home. What I found was that it wasn’t as expensive as I thought it would be. In fact, I already had some of the items thanks to my attempts and the gyms and yoga studios. When you get ready to build your home gym, the following pieces of fitness equipment will allow you to do just about any workout you like.
Dumbbells – The first item that you will need is a set of dumbbells or a couple of adjustable dumbbells. These are needed if you plan on doing any kind of weight training that is body-weight based. Not sure if you need strength training? Check out these reasons to lift weights.
Resistence Bands – These bands are another option to help with your strength training. They can be used instead of dumbbells in most cases or as an alternative to the pull-up bar.
Pull-up Bar – Like stated above, this is an optional item. But it is another option to help with your strength training regimen.
Medicine Ball – This is another option for strength training workouts.
Kettlebells – Like dumbbells, these are used for strength training to both build muscle and tone the ones you have.
Yoga Mat – I always try to include yoga and stretching into any fitness routine I do. A yoga mat is also a great to have around if you are modifying push-ups or are doing a workout where you are on your knees because it will add some padding and stability.
Yoga Towel – Depending on the type of yoga you are doing, you may need a towel. I use mine whenever I am doing a power or flow style or when I am doing a PiYo workout.
Yoga blocks & straps – These are optional but helpful depending on your level of strength and flexibility. I do not have open hips (hazard of being a runner), so there are some poses that I need a block or strap to help.
Weight Bench – While a weight bench is not required per se, it is extremely helpful if you are doing strength training. Be sure to get an adjustable one so that you can make sure you are hitting every part of the body during your workout.
Exercise Ball – An exercise or stability ball is a great option to a weight bench. It will allow you to do most of the strength training workouts you will need (though in some cases it is a little more difficult). It is also helpful if you are doing pilates and core based workouts.
Agility Markers – These nifty markers are great if you are doing a lot of agility work. Because I am a runner, many of my cardio workouts that are not actual runs focus on my agility as it helps to improve performance.
